D3


D3 is a cold work tool steel with high-carbon and high-chromium . It is an air hardening tool steel. Also, it can be oil quenched. Grinding Process is more difficult in D3 as compared to D2 due to higher wear resistance.D2 has better life than D3.

 58-64 HRC. (Maximum can be achieved)

D3 tool component must be pre-heated  at 900-950°C and  then raised  to 1050-1100°C. It has be soaked well until uniformly heated is done. D3 tool steel is relatively hard at elevated temperature. So, initial hammer blows need to be light and the temperature shouldnot  fall below 1020°C until  metal begins to move/flow. Final forging  not to be done below temperature 900°C.


Annealing is done slowly and uniformly at  900°C. Then it is soaked for 3-4 hours and cooled in the furnace at room temperature.Re-heating is done at  800-1040°C ,then soaked again for 3-4hours and cooled down in the furnace at room temperature.


Stress Relieving is done in order to minimize the distortion.It is performed after rough machining. The component is heated to 600-650°C ,soaked well and cooled in the furnace/air. Then the finishing of the tool is done


 In a controlled atmosphere,the tools need to be heated.. If  not possible, we recommend pack hardening . D3 tool steel component must be pre heated to 750-800°C. and then allowed  to soak at the same temperature. Then raise it to the  temperature of 950-980°Cfor hardening. The component must be soaked thoroughly at this  temperature for 35 minutes / 25mm of  section, then cooled  or quenched  accordingly


We recommend double tempering for D3 tool steel.As soon as the D3 tool steel component has warmly cooled after hardening,tempering should be done. For tempering,we select suitable temperature.D3 component is heated slowly and uniformly. When the desired temperature is attained,soak it for atleast 1hour/25mm of section. After first tempering,repeat the same for second tempering.

The steel may be nitrided to give a wear resistant case of approximately Rockwell C60 apparent acerbity with a case abyss of 0.35mm to 0.5mm. Nitriding P20 apparatus animate aswell increases the bane resistance. After nitriding at 525°C in ammonia gas the apparent acerbity of the P20 will be about 650HV.

This procedure will vary according to the shape and size of D3 tool component.Other factors like type of furnace,medium  for quenching etc also matter.


Martempering

This process is done to reduce internal strain,distortion and also cracking risk.The component is pre-heated dry to 300-400°C. Pre-heat in salt for 10minutes/inch of section at 800-850°C. Then temperature is increased at 800-850°C in salt for 10 minutes/inch of section.Marquenching in salt to be done for 230-250°C for 25mm of section. This procedure is an alternative procedure used when suitable salt bath equipments are available. The component is cooled in still air and tempering is done.
