P20-Steel

P 20 is a plastic mould steel. It is a pre-hardened material with uniform hardness. Three grades of P20 are
  • Din 1.2311
  • Din 1.2738
  • Din 1.2316
Chromium,Molybdenum and Nickel are the main alloying elements of P20 steel. These elements enhance the toughness and hardeness of P20 steel. It can be nitrided or carburized. These steels are capable of being machined into complex large dies and molds (plastic and rubber molds). P20 steel are mostly used in the Carburizing condition. We have all the imported stock. We deal with world’s leading manufacturers. We stock in german made grades.
  • P20 : 28-32 HRC
  • P20HH: 38-40 HRC
Round and flat both are available. Flat :
  • Thickness:20mm-50mm
  • Width :20mm-2mts
  • Length:20mm – 5mts
We have 50 tonnes material in ready stock. DIN: 1.2311: It is 2% Chromium with 30-32 HRC hardness. It is used for plastic and rubber molds. DIN: 1.2738: All sizes are available. It is used for high glass and transparent products.
  • Carbon:0.4%
  • Nickel:1%
  • Chromium:2%

Applications

P20 Steel is mainly used in
Plastic moulds
Backers
Bolsters
Injection moulds
Rubber moulds
Rails
wear strips

Carbon 0.40% Silicon 0.40%
Manganese 1.00% Chromium 1.20%
Molybdenum 0.35%

P20 Steel is heated slowly and forged at1050°C( not below  930°C). Then it is cooled slowly.

P20 Steel is heated uniformly at a temperature of 770-790°C , then soaked well and cooled down slowly in furnace.

P20 Steel is heated to 460-500°C, then soaked well and cooled in air.In order to relieve machine strains, stabilizing is recommended before finishing the machining,in parts where dies have to be heavily machined.

Uniformly P20 Steel is heated to 820-840°C and then oil quenched.

Uniform heating and soaking at tempering temperature is needed for minimum 1hour/25mm of section. Then it is cooled  in still air.

In order to give P20 steel a good wear resistance case(of approx.  Rockwell C60 surface hardness), it can be nitrided. Corrosion resistance is increased  by Nitriding.Nitriding is done in ammonia gas at 525°C with approx. 650HV surface hardness.

Temperature Time Approx. Depth of Case
525ºC 20 hours 0.30mm
525ºC 40 hours 0.35mm
525ºC 60 hours 0.50mm

P20 tool steel can have a 55-59HRC surface hardness.

700HV surface hardness can e attained by tuffriding at 570ºC.

After this process, tempering at 180°C for 4hours is required, thus prevents hydrogen emrittlement.

P20 attains 50-55HRC hardness after induction/flame hardening. Immediate tempering is required after hardening.P20 steel then needs to be air cooled.

It varies according to the shape and size of P20 steel. P20 steel is heated to 871-899 ºC in  carburizing medium. After carburization, P20 is heated to 816-871 ºC , then hold on for 15minutes. After this, oil quenching is done.
