O2 tool steel is an oil hardening tool steel which is supplied in the annealed condition.

It is an excellent general purpose tool steel often used It is used where the expense of high C high Cr tool steel won’t be justified.

O2 tool steel is heated uniformly to 1000°C. Forging is done within a range of 850-1050°C, reheat if necessary. Then O2 component is slowly cooled down(preferably in a furnace) in order to avoid setting up stresses.
O2 tool steel is supplied in the annealed condition and in the machineable condition. If forging or hardening of the component is done, then it has to be re-annealed. Annealed hardness will be about 229 Brinell.Annealing of O2 tool steel is done slowly and uniformly at 720°C ,equalize and then cool in the furnace.
O2 tool steel is heated uniformly to 790-820°C until it is heated through. (If possible , it must be pre-heated at 300-500°C). Allow 30 minutes / 25 millimetre of ruling section and quenching in oil to be done immediately.
