420 Steel

420 steel is chromium alloyed stainless plastic mould steel. It has minimum 12% chromium, thus giving 420 steel a  property of corrosion resistance.  420 stainless steel has the highest hardness – 50HRC among all the steel grades.   Characteristics
  • good polishability
  • good hardenability
  • high hardness  after heat treatment
  • fair corrosion resistance ,thus making it suitable  for applications requiring good hygiene in the industries , mainly medical and optical.

Forging

Forging of 420 Stainless  Steel is done by  heating it  slowly and uniformly at1000°C . Then it is cooled slowlyin the furnace or in a thermoinsulating material.

Annealing

420 steel  is usually  supplied in the annealed condition.Forging or hardening makes the 420 steel to get re-annealed.

420 Steel is heated slowly at a temperature of 780°C , then  cooled down slowly in furnace at  600°C and then cooled in air.

Stress Relieving

Stress Relieving is done in order to minimize the distortion .420  Steel is heated to 650°C, then soaked well for minimum 2hours/mm of section and cooled in furnace at 500°C and then cooled freely in the air.In order to relieve machine strains, stabilizing is recommended before finishing the machining,in parts where dies have to be heavily machined.

Hardening

420 stainless steel is pre-heated  to 600-700°C until it is  heated through heated and then  heated  to the final hardening temperature ,i.e., 980-1050°C .  A  neutral salt bath is made under  controlled atmosphere in the  furnace or in the vacuum in order to protect the 420 tool component from decarburization. Then it is air cooled or  oil quenching is done.

Tempering

Uniform heating and soaking at tempering temperature is needed for minimum 1hour/25mm of section. Then it is cooled  in still air. We recommend double tempering.Tempering to be done at 250°C in order to achieve the steel with the best hardness, corrosion resistance and toughness.

TEMPERATURE°C                    HARDNESS(HRC)

100                                                           56

200                                                           54

300                                                           52

400                                                           54

500                                                           53

600                                                           34

Heat Treatment

It varies according to the shape and size of 420 steel. Other factors like type of furnace, medium  for quenching etc also matter.rate of heating, rate of cooling and soaking time also vary according to shape and size of 420 steel component.

Final Grinding

It needs to be done in good condition using a suitable dressing tool.We recommend wet grinding. If dry grinding is done, then must use a very soft wheel for the same.

Quality Assured Supply

With our material,we provide mill test certificate and ultrasonic Ok certificate (Note: Provide only if mentioned before placing the order).
