A2 Tool Steel

A2 tool steel is an air hardening tool steel which  offers  high abrasion resistance and high  toughness after heat treatment. As the chromium content in A2 tool steel is less, so the wear resistant properties of A2 are not so great as found in  D2 tool steel  and D3 tool steel , but it is easily  machineable than D2 and D3 tool steel. As A2 tool steel has an air hardening quality, so it  is more suitable than  oil hardening tool steels  or water hardening tool steels in cases where large mass of tools have to be produced.

A2 tool steel is preheated at 650-680°C  and then  to 1050-1100°C .It is  soaked  until the component is uniformly heated. Initially, hammering  should be light due to high strength of this  steel.  Forging temperature should be  above 1000°C until the metal starts yielding. Final forging to be done not  below 900°C. Slow cooling After forging, the component needs to be cooled slowly to avoid cracking of the steel component.

A2 tool steel  is usually  supplied in the annealed condition  . If forging or hardening of the component is done, then it has to be re-annealed. A2 tool steel component is heated slowly to 850-870°C, minimum for 2hours at the same temperature and then the temperature of the furnace is lowered to 730-750°C,for 4-6hours.Then the component is slowly cooled in the furnace at 600°C or below this temperature before the tool component is cooled in the air.

Stress Relieving is done in order to minimize the distortion or cracking which may occur due to heavy machining or due to heavy grinding. It is performed after rough machining. The component is heated slowly to 670-700°C ,soaked well  for minimum 2hours/25mm of section and cooled in the furnace. Then the finishing of the tool is done.

A2 tool steel is pre heated  slowly   at 790-820°C  with thorough soaking at the same temperature  before it is  raised  to the hardening temperature of 950-980°C in the furnace. Air cooling or oil quenching is to be done.

Scaling and decarburization will not occur if the steel is protected  by heating in a reducing atmosphere furnace. Heating  is to be done in a neutral salt bath  or can be done by pack hardening. Tempering to be done  as soon as the tool is hand warm.

Tempering to be done  after hardening. A2tool steel is  heated  slowly to the required tempering temperature. It must be soaked  for 1 hour / 25mm of section (minimum for one hour ) and allowed  to cool in the  air. We recommend double tempering .

Temperature [°C] 150 200 250 300 350 400
Hardness [HRc] 62-61 61-60 60-59 59-58 58-57 58-57

It needs to be done in good condition using a suitable dressing tool.We recommend wet grinding. If dry grinding is done, then must use a very soft wheel for the same.

It varies according to the shape and size of A2 tool steel. Other factors like type of furnace, medium  for quenching etc also matter.Rate of heating, rate of cooling and soaking time also vary according to shape and size of  A2  tool steel component.

With our material,we provide mill test certificate and ultrasonic Ok certificate (Note: Provide only if mentioned before placing the order).
