D6 Tool Steel

D6 tool steel is a high carbon high chromium tool steel grade with very high wear resistance and edge holding quality. It is an air hardening alloy tool steel which has  excellent  wear  resistance and abrasion. D6 tool steel has good  hardening properties , dimensional stability and  high resistance to tempering.

Form of Supply

Both flat and round are available in all sizes.

Applications

  •  Blanking and shearing tools
  • Drawing tools
  • Drawing dies
  • Mandrels
  • Press tools
  • Forming tools and shear blades

D6 tool steel is also used  where we require maximum wear resistance

Element     Content (%)
Carbon               2.00
Manganese         0.35
Tungsten            0.75
Chromium          12.00
Vanadium           0.20
Silicon         max 0.35

D6 tool steel is heated  slowly and uniformly to 700°C  and then  rapidly to 900-1050°C.  It is  cooled  slowly after forging, preferably in the furnace.

D6  tool steel  is supplied in the annealed condition  and in the  machineable condition. If forging or hardening of the component is done, then it has to be re-annealed.  D6 tool component is heated to 800-840°C and slowly cooled in the furnace. 225 brinell is the hardness attained after annealing.

If heavy machining is done  or if the tool has some  unbalanced section,  stresses must be removed before hardening by heating it up to 650-700°C, then equalize  and slowly cool down.

D6  tool steel is heated  slowly  at 750-800°C   before it is  raised  to the hardening temperature of 950-980°C . Soaking needs to be done  thoroughly . Air cooling or oil quenching is preferred. . D6 tool steel  is suitable for vacuum (i.e. high speed gas) hardening.

D6 tool steel is  heated  uniformly and thoroughly at a  selected tempering temperature and held  for at least 1 hour /25mm of total thickness. We recommend double tempering and then  intermediately  cool down  to room temperature.

Temperature [°C] 100 200 300 400 500 600
Hardness [HRc] 63 62 60 58 56 48

It varies according to the shape and size of D6 tool steel. Other factors like type of furnace, medium  for quenching etc also matter.Rate of heating, rate of cooling and soaking time also vary according to shape and size of  D6  tool steel component.

It needs to be done in good condition using a suitable dressing tool.We recommend wet grinding. If dry grinding is done, then must use a very soft wheel for the same.

With our material,we provide mill test certificate and ultrasonic Ok certificate (Note: Provide only if mentioned before placing the order).
